Me and My Life

AARP and Tanger Outlets would like to invite your members to take part in a stylish day of free pampering, refreshments and the opportunity to makeover their lives and receive valuable information dedicated to helping women plan for their future at this year’s “Me & My Life” Makeover Event.

“Me & My Life” is part of AARP’s Decide. Create. Share. Initiative, a nationwide effort aimed to help increase women’s awareness about the importance of taking charge of their future and empower them to start planning now for their future long-term care needs.  There are four pillar issues: health, personal finances, home and community, and your personal wishes.

Please join us for this insightful, FREE event coming to Mebane on May 19, 2012 at Tanger Outlets Mebane.

Event Details:

Who: Special guest Lee Woodruff — author, mother, co-founder of ReMIND.org and the Bob Woodruff Foundation — will share her compelling story of hope during the recovery of her husband, Bob, the ABC News Anchor who was critically injured in Iraq in 2006, will inspire as she describes the need for a passionate and purposeful life, and the importance of long-term care.

What: Free mini makeovers, professional photos, refreshments, a limited number of gift bags, games, giveaways, information and resources.

When: Saturday, May 19, 12:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Where: Tanger Outlets Mebane, 4000 Arrowhead Boulevard, Mebane, NC  27302

Why: Women often focus their energy on others – caring for kids and parents – and rarely take the time to think about their own future. This event highlights the need for women to start securing their own future now.  We're providing tools and information so women can plan their second phase of life.

We’d like to invite you and your networks to join us. We would also like to kindly request your support in spreading the word about this great and FREE event of benefit to women and their loved ones.  Here are a few ideas on how you can help:

  • Send an e-blast to your membership
  • Post event details on your website’s “events or calendar” section
  • Include event information in your organization’s e-newsletter
  • Share event information via your organization’s social media channels (FaceBook, Twitter, LinkedIn)

Duke Gardens Opportunites

Now that we are beginning a new year, we look ahead to many exciting opportunities for volunteers at Duke Gardens.

First, I would like to share with you that the Charlotte Brody Discovery Garden will become a reality this year. Construction is well underway. This new garden will expand program opportunities for all ages. In addition to trained program guides, this garden will also utilize volunteers as greeters (Ambassadors) to assist daily visitors. We are excited to discover interested volunteers who are currently in the program as well as expand the volunteer corps to meet these needs. Dates are set for the 2012 Docent Training.  Veteran docents will note a format change in the training schedule this year. The dates are as follows:

February 21; 9am-12pm (History of Duke Gardens. This session is required for all docents)
‐Refresh your knowledge—current docents encouraged to attend 2012 Docent Training Dates

February 23; 9am-12pm (Children’s docents only)
‐Learn to lead School, Children’s and Family Programs using inquiry‐based education

February 28; 9am-12pm (Adult docent session, Children’s docents are encouraged to attend)
‐Learn all you need to know to lead tours for adult groups, including Duke Family lore

March 1; 9am-12pm (Children’s docents only)
‐Learn to lead School, Children’s and Family Programs using inquiry‐based education

Following this experiential formal training, there will be additional dates scheduled with each curator to tour/train in their specific area of Duke Gardens.

There is an application process,
(this link will take you to the application, http://auxweb.duke.edu/GVT/login.aspx followed by an interview. This year Duke Gardens will also begin performing background checks on all volunteers assisting with Children’s programming. This safeguarding measure has been encouraged by Duke University HR and is to protect Duke Gardens, Duke University and the Volunteer.

Children’s docents are trained to present tours and programs to Elementary school groups, children and families. Adult tour guides offer walking tours to adult groups and trolley (golf cart) tours to individuals who need assistance.

I look forward to hearing from many of you to register for this important training. Let me encourage you to spread the word with friends and family and please forward this email to your neighborhood list servs and any other groups of people whom you think may be interested.
